I personally know of more than one fella who has opened his earlier vintage 19's to find labeled and unlabeled large frame 416-8A woofers in their 19's.Model 19's used the following:
Early: 416-8B & 802-8G
Late: 416-8C & 902
If Analog Addict sees this, maybe he'll post. He had mismatched 416's in his 19's which i believe came from the original owner and were untouched from day one.
416-8B and 802-8G i believe are the original engineering criteria. But, i think Old Guy's post up just a couple from here is probably the most accurate description of what was actually used, and what you can expect to find. While the majority of 19's probably came with the "8B + 8G" combination, the reality is that you can probably find examples with nearly any variation of either component in them.
The beauty of Altec components is that when you discover that you have some mismatched, you can usually find proper mates and flip your odd components in a fairly break even scenario.

Seller says these came out of boxes, so that fits with what I have seen. But there may be ones sold loose that same way. Never say never.

Hmmmmmm...... I was under the impression that the "A" model 416 was only a rear mounted frame... The Model 19 has no way to mount a rear framed LF driver. The 802-8G without a loading cap and a normal back cover was the intended early HF driver. 902 without a loading cap and normal rear cover was the intended late HF driver.

Lets step away from the model 19 for just a moment and refer to the 1975 reference guide. Several of us agree that this is a fairly accurate document. Specifically, we'll look at the Valencia 846B/846U. As indicated by the following chart, there are 5 possibilities for a Valencia woofer, two of which are a 15 inch 416-8A and a 16 inch 416-8A.

FWIW, one of the oddest ducks i've encountered is a 420-8B, with the extended range, dual compliance cone, in a large(16") frame, with the stepped alnico magnet structure of the 416-8B/414-8C

I have seen 416A with the 16 inch frame. Those frames were sometimes used before the official date. And old ones were still used after. There is no hard and fast changeover....

The later Iconic/Valencia with the ducted ports (846B) I've seen has a sealed rear cover with a removable driver baffle to allow mounting either driver frame.
